Insurance is a product and just like other products, reflects the global trends, culture and zeitgeist. I wasn’t old enough to see the advent of Terrorism coverage after 911 but I have been around to see and handle my fair share of cyber claims. I came across this new offering tonight... Just sad that this is where we are at now.

One of my favorite things about my job is how the modern world plays into each loss.  I can usually get footage of an incident from many angles or find information about someone in new ways.

Risk:reward.

Your insurance company was there first.

I could imagine it being quite profitable given that people seem to greatly overestimate the likelihood of these events, especially compared auto or health insurance where people seem happy to underestimate their chances of needing it.

It is sad that people think it is needed, not just because of the danger, but because the need for this product speaks to fear of litigation, even though it should not be up to businesses to defend their staff and customers from deranged shooters.

The concept behind insurance is a simple one. Estimate how much $$$ risk exposure there is for a particular item, than charge a large group of people / companies more than the that to protect against it.

The high profile events noted in this ad did in fact cost a lot of $$$, although the likelihood of one happening is astronomically low. So, it should be pretty cheap, and honestly probably a good business decision to purchase.

A friend of a freind’s dad was a lawyer in NYC - after 9/11 he had the pleasant task of having to argue that the 9/11 attack on the twin towers was a single event and not two (there was a per occurrence limit of something like $2B on the policy covering the buildings). I think they eventually settled out somewhere in the middle.

Fear is just another commodity here.
